Detty December in Lagos is a cultural phenomenon, an economic engine, and a bold statement of the city’s rising status as Africa’s entertainment capital. Slay-gos, a name coined by my friend Motunrayo, is a city I spent part of my adolescence in while commuting back and forth between my hometown — Onitsha. This trip was pivotal because it marked my return since moving to Canada, coming back 13 years later as a young adult. The experience had strong coming‑of‑age undertones. I was nervous to return, afraid I’d simply pick up where I left off, but it turned out to be quite the opposite. There’s an unspoken privilege in being somewhere where people who look like you fill every space: on billboards, in commercials, in movies and music—all centred around your heritage. I missed Nigeria far more than I realized, and this trip gave me the chance to rediscover the history, culture, and creative energy my country generates, energy that eventually resonates across the world. Lagos in December is a whirlwind of back‑to‑back parties, weddings, concerts, and diaspora homecomings, every night is somehow commemorative. When it comes to events, partying, social intiatives, fashion and lifestyle it’s important to recognize Lagos as a stylish force to be reckoned with.
Street Souk
Africa's flagship fashion event, Street Souk Lagos 2025, brings together leading local and international companies, artists, and young stars to celebrate the dynamic streetwear culture. It was a vibrant blend of entertainment, music, and fashion in the busy center of Lagos. Over 100 booths selling clothes and merchandise, Street Souk featured interactive pop-ups, skate ramps, live concerts, gaming areas, and special drops.
